SIMMONS SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK

Ruth Dean, Ph.D., M.S.W., Professor

Simmons School of Social work has placed Terry Wise’s book,Waking Up, on the syllabus as important reading in the required course on clinical social work practice.  Students love reading it, not only because of the valuable information it provides on the subject of work with suicidal clients but also because of the insight it offers into the treatment process in general.  Terry’s skill as a writer enables the reader to obtain a vivid sense of her experience of suicide, of her treatment and of the gradual recovery that followed.  Her writing captures and presents the treatment process even without her former therapist’s contribution…The book should be required reading for social work students and all mental health professionals.  It makes a valuable contribution to understanding the phenomenology of suicide and the treatment of a suicidal client.
